James C. Gowen, First Lieutenant of Company A, Gainesville Light Infantry, 11th Georgia Volunteer Regiment, son of E. N. Gowen of Gainesville, Georgia, died at Warrenton, Virginia September 22, 1862 of wounds received at the Battle of Manassas.  W. H. Mitchell, his captain, submitted a eulogy of James C. Gowen February 5, 1863 for newspaper publication, according to "Marriage and Death Notices from the Up-Country of South Carolina as taken from Greenville Newspapers, 1826-1863" compiled by Brent H. Holcomb, C.A.L.S.

Herman R. Gowens was born February 2, 1920, probably in Harralson County.  He was married about 1943 to Mavis Vir­ginia Pope who was born July 15, 1926.  She was the first child of William Almer Pope and Effie Morelock Pope, according to "History of the Popes" by Lois Owens Newman.

HENRY COUNTY, GEORGIA

A "General Gowan, CSA" is reported to have surrendered to Union forces at Jonesboro, Henry County, in September 1864, following the Battle of Atlanta.  When he surrendered it is re­ported that he carried the sword of Maj. Sidney Coolidge, USA, who was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga.
