William J. M. Gowen enlisted as a private in Company H, Second Maine Cavalry Regiment in January 1864 at Augusta, Maine.  They were transported from Augusta to Portland for the purpose of embarking on transports for New Orleans, La.

Upon arrival, the regiment was ordered to proceed to Alexandria, Louisiana where they arrived on April 21, 1964.  It was immediately thrown into the battles as part of the 3d Cavalry Brigade.  The Second Regiment participa-ted in the engagements at Cherryville Cross Roads, Marks-ville, Avoyelles Prarie and Yellow Bayou.

On August 9, 1864, the regiment embarked at New Orleans for Pensacola, Florida, arriving on the 11th, and encamped near Barrancas.

The regiment was employed in the Battle of Marianna, Georgia in September and the Battle of Pollard, Alabama in De-cember.  During the year, the regiment lost by deaths one officer and 278 enlisted men.

On the 23d of February, 1865, Lt. Col. Spurling, with 300 men, attacked the enemy in considerable force at Milton, Florida, and after a sharp encounter, completely routed them.

On March 19, 1865, the regiment joined Gen. Steele’s command, concentrated at Pensacola, preparatory to the movement which resulted in the capture of Mobile, Alabama and the op-ening of the State of Alabama to the advance of Federal Troops.

After the fall of Mobile, a detachment of the regiment was assigned to the 16th Army Corps, being the only Cavalry with that body of 30,000 men.  The detachment served during the long march of nearly 200 miles to the city of Montgomery, Alabama.  In August 1865, the detachment was ordered to return to Florida, and rejoined the regiment at Barrancas.

The regiment was then broken up and small detachments were stationed at various points throughout Western Florida to pre-serve harmony, and to suppress any insurrectionary move-ments that might take place.

By the 1st of December, the entire regiment was concentrated at Barrancas, and mustered out of the U. S. service on Decem-ber 6.

Twenty-five commissioned officers and about 116 enlisted men were mustered out and discharged in Florida, to become residents of the South, making oath of their intention to remain there.

Pvt. William J. M. Gowen with the remainder of the regiment, comprising 14 officers and 500 enlisted men, embarked De-cember 8, 1865 for Augusta where they were paid and finally discharged on December 21.

Leslie Vaughan in October 2000 wrote:

“Genealogy & Family History of the State of Maine,” page 643 " The family of Wilson have been resident in Maine from early pioneer times, as early as perhaps 1635, and descendants of the immigrant have been honored and influential citizens of the region of this settlement for almost two centuries and a half.

Gowen Wilson, immigrant, and the ancestor of a numerous progeny is traditionally reputed as having been from Scotland.  Some have said that he came from Paisley, but it is impossible to trace this statement back to its source; however, it seems to have been handed down from early times.  He was born in 1618 and resided early in Kittery, Maine.  Information about him is very limited, and affords very slight ground for any in-ferences. He had a son and a daughter, who apparently were born between 1650 and 1660.  From this it can be reasonably inferred that Gowen Wilson was born between 1615 and 1635.

He was a member of the town in Kittery in 1647, which sets the date of his birth back before 1625, presumably.  So that the indications are that Gowen Wilson settled in Kittery at some time beween 1635 and 1647--unless he came over with his father, of which there is no evidence.

Gowen Wilson was married in October 1639 in Falmouth, Maine to Martha Sargent, daughter of Philip Sargent and Mar-tha Hadley Sargent, according to Paul Nichols, a descendant of San Diego, CA.

On January 19, 1658, 24 acres were granted by the town to Gowen Wilson; this grant contained twenty-four acres.

Fifteen years later he received a second grant of twenty-one acres.  The record was as follows:

'Kittery ye 12th of June 1673--at a leagall town meeting for ye granting of lands in ye lower part of ye river and town of Kittery there was granted unto Gowen Willson and his heires forever an addition to his house lot Joyning to Richard Endles.  This is a true copie taken out of the rigenall, Aprell 30 1674--as Attest Francis Hook.'

'Measured and layd out unto Gowen Wilson his additional grant dated June 12, 1672--between his house lot and Richard Endles house lot a hundred and sixty poles in length North East from Spruce Creek, and one and twenty poles in breadth with Richard Endles sd lot and ye Goose Case on ye South East, and Contains one and twenty acres, I say layed out this 20 of December 1678 per me John Wincoll Survr.'

This land is situated at the junction of the Norton road with the main road up the creek.  Gowen Wilson was one of the men who signed their submission to the government of the Massa-chusetts Bay Colony in 1652.

On May 2, 1763 Gowen Wilson gave a deed to Joseph Wilson at Falmouth which was witnessed by Moses Worster.  Moses Worster of Pleasant River, Maine was one of the appraisers of the personal estate of Gowen Wilson on May 2, 1769.

In June 1674, and in June 1675, Gowen Wilson was elected to the board of selectmen of the town.  The next mention of him is in 1680, when he and Enoch Hutchins made an inventory of the estate of John Phillips.  He signed a deed of gift to his son-in-law, Andrew Haley, June 2 1684.

Gowen Wilson died between 1684 and 1686.  On August 6, 1686, one of his sons signed his satisfaction with his portion of his father's estate, which shows that Gowen had died some time previously.

Nothing more is known of Martha Sargent Wilson.  The ab-sence of mention of her in the settlement of his estate shows that she was dead at that time.  Three children are mentioned: John, Joseph and Deborah; as living after the death of their father."

OSSINING, N. Y., June 2, Robert Fellows Gowen, a pioneer radio engineer, died here today in a nursing home.  He was 82 years old and lived on Overton Road.

Mr. Gowen was a radio engineer and chief engineer for the late Lee De Forest, called "the father of radio," during the days of his most active experimentation and invention.  Mr. Gowen became interested in radio during his student days at Harvard, from which he graduated in 1906.  He was the founder of the first radio club at Harvard in 1906.  He worked in the Harvard science laboratory as a graduate student and joined the engineering department of American Telephone & Telegraph Company in 1909.

In 1916 he became radio engineer for the De Forest Radio & Telegraph Company and in 1921 Chief Engineer and plant manager.  During this period Mr. Gowen was credited with pioneering long distance radio transmission on low power.  In 1920 he broadcast from New York to Chicago, 900 miles on 300 watts and from New York to North Dakota, 1,500 miles, on 500 watts.  He was also closely connected with the development of the Audion tube, a three-electron vacuum tube.

Subsequently he founded his own laboratory here which specialized in receiver design and construction.  In 1928 Mr. Gowen went into the production of 16mm documentary, educational and industrial motion pictures.  He won awards for several of his films.

                                        ==O==

John Fellows Gowen, son of Charles Sewell Gowen and Alice Jerusha Fellows Gowen, was born September 1, 1889 at Os-sining, New York.  He and each of his four siblings, Robert Fellows Gowen [Newsletter, 11/98], Mary Fellows Gowen, Alice Fellows Gowen I and Alice Fellows Gowen II, all had Fellows as a middle name.

John Fellows Gowen was a student at Harvard University in the class of 1907 and was graduated in the class of 1909, ac-cording to Harvard Alumni Directory of 1910.  He was a hap-py-go-lucky collegiate, according to his daughter, Faith Wal-lace Gowen Magoun of Manchester, Massachusetts.  He spent as much time writing poetry and appearing in drama plays as he did in studying engineering.

After graduation, he lived with his widowed mother in Os-sining.  He was married September 22, 1915 at Dobbs Ferry, New York to Caroline Goldsborough Wallace, daughter of Benjamin Lawrence Wallace and Ellen Douglass Hoff Wal-lace.

He was soon employed as civil engineer on the construction of the New York subway.  Excavation for the subway had begun in 1904, and it was being expanded to 237 miles of track to connect Manhattan with all the burroughs of New York city.

He had so much fun in digging up the city, that he turned it into a treasure hunt.  "John F. Gowen" wrote "Treasure Hunting--A Game for Everybody" which was published by Putman's Sons in 1925.

John Fellows Gowen developed an interest in genealogy.  He, a descendant of William Alexander Gowen [Newsletter, 4/90] who was captured in the Battle of Dunbar and deported by Ol-iver Cromwell to New England in 1650, wrote a 35-page booklet in April 1942 on his Scottish ancestor and his military service under Alexander Leslie, first Earl of Leven.

John Fellows Gowen concluded that his ancestor was a Scot-tish Highlander.  He cited the statement of fellow prisoner John Stewart who accompanied William Alexander Gowen in the "Unity" on the voyage to New England.  Stewart addressed a petition to Sir Edmund Andros, the governor:

" . . . your poor petitioner was in service in five battles under the noble Marquis of Montrose [James Graham, Fifth Earl and First Marquis of Montrose] in Scotland for His Majesty King Charles the First & thereby suf-fered & received many dangerous wounds, having es-caped with his life through mercy . . . was afterward taken by Lord Cromwell in the fight at Dunbar and sent to this land where I was sold for eight years future ser-vice to purchase my future freedom . . . "

Research of the accounts of the military campaign leading up to the Battle of Dunbar convinced John Fellows Gowen that "none but the Highlanders would follow the banner of Mar-quis of Montrose."

John Fellows Gowen directed the preparation of "Modern Application of Sheet Copper in Building Construction," a hand book for the Copper and Brass Research Association by whom he was then employed.  The volume was published in New York in 1948.

In the November 12, 1949 edition of "New York Times," was reported the death of John Fellows Gowen who died No-vember 10, 1949 at Doctors Hospital.  He was mentioned as the father of Mrs. William Richard Russell Hay and Faith Wallace Gowen of Dobbs Ferry.  Funeral services were held at Zion Church, Dobbs Ferry and interment was at Lowell Cemetery, Lowell, Massachusetts.
