property. He reappeared in the 1870
census of Tooele City with $500 in real estate and $200 in personal property.
Hugh
Gowans, perhaps a son of Andrew Gowans, was born in South Carolina about
1832. He, a laborer, age 28, was enumerated
nearby to Andrew Gowans in the 1860 census of Tooele County. He showed $100 in real estate and $200 in
personal property. He reappeared in
1870 as the head of a household at age 37 as a farmer. He showed no real estate and no personal
property.

Ephraim
Gowans, son of Hugh S. Gowans and Betsy Gowans Gowans, was born at Tooele,
Utah, February 1, 1868. He was married to
Mary Crisman Lyman of Salt Lake City June 1, 1893. He received a B. S. degree from Brigham Young College in
1894. He received an M. D. degree from
Baltimore Medical College in 1897. He
was professor of zoology at Utah Agricultural College from 1897 to 1899. He was professor of anatomy at the
University of Utah from 1900 to 1906.
From 1919 to 1922 he was State Director of Health Education for the
state of Utah. In 1926 he was listed in
“Who’s Who in
America.” He officed in
Desert Bank Building, Salt Lake City.
He was a Mormon. He was a Judge
of Juvenile Court, Salt Lake City from 1906-1909. He was superintendent of State Industrial School in Ogden, Utah
from 1909 to 1919. He was a lecturer in
education hygiene at the University of Utah.
He lived in Buckingham Apartments in Salt Lake City in 1966.
