                                                        "Georgetown, Texas

                                                         May 6, 1901

Dear Brother, Sister & Family,

I will answer your sweet and highly appreciated letter which I received Saturday.

Oh, Sinda, our dear Papa is dead.  He died April 28.  He died at Burnet.  Mama hired a hack and driver and brought him home the day he died.  Lizzie, Asbury, Ada and Ona was up there with Mama when he died.  We had been over at Mama's Saturday night and Sunday and had just got home when George Fielder [(F3/1.2)] came and told us the sad news.

We went back over there that night.  We got there at 11 o'clock.  Oh, it didn't seem like home.  It was the saddest place I ever saw.

Sinda, there was a big crowd at the burying, and all taken it awful hard.  They buried him at Chalk Ridge right close to Mothers [grandmother, Amanda M. Fish Whitmire (F5/1.3)] grave.  We have given up our Grandma and lots of friends, but Sinda, nothing seems so hard as giving up Papa.  Just seemed like I couldn't stand it.  But we have all got to die, and I know Papa was prepared to die, and all we can do now is to prepare to meet him for we will never see him again in this troublesome world.

Sinda, he did look so sweet and innocent.  They got the nicest coffin and clothes, a nice white shirt and black tie, and the sweetest black suit.  The coffin and the clothes cost $40.

The next day after Papa was buried John Bowlin's baby got rattle snake bit and lived about four hours.  It was buried that night at the same grave yard where Papa was buried.  I haven't saw John and Ida since the baby died, but I heard they taken it awful hard.

Sinda, I was right sick last night.  I taken a running off and throwing up.  I think it was the flux.  The people around here has been having them.  I don't hardly feel like sitting up this morning.  Mr. and Mrs. Green is still at Burnet under treatment of Dr. Cheatham.  Nora Lord and children are here.  They come a Saturday.

Yes, Sinda, the old lady Smart [Amy Cox Smart (C4/2.1)] told me they was kinfolks to Jim.  I liked her and the girls right well.  George is fixing to go to town.  I will have to close as I don't feel like writing.  I will try to do better next time.  Hoping this will find you all well.  I close, as ever your sister.
