MATTHEW MORGAN McCALL, M.D, Alikchi Chukma of the Choctaws, Page
.
A daughter (M5/1.2) was born about 1806 to John McCall (M6/1.1)
and Elizabeth Thomas McCall (T6/1.1), according to a letter written by John D.
McCall (M3/2.5) March 12, 1941. He
wrote:
"Dr. McCall's children were left orphans when they were
small and lived with an aunt who was a sister to my grandfather near
Cameron. She married a doctor whose
name I believe was Yerrelton. She was
red-headed and my father and uncle Perry said that she got after them quite
frequently for the mischief they would get into."
Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan (C2/10.4) who
researched the family for many years stated "Dr. Yerrelton lived in
Yerrelton in Milam County, but practiced medicine in Bell County." Yerrellton, located about 10 mies northwest
of Cameron, Texas, had a school, a store, a church and a cottongin, according
to Blanche Maurie Duncum Monroe (D2/1.3).
No Yerreltons appeared in the index of the 1870 Texas census, but a
Thomas Yarrew appeared in the 1870 census of Milam County, page 253, living at
Maysfield, Texas. A William Yarrell
appeared in the 1870 census of McLennan County, page 1104, with post address at
Waco, Texas. Of this family nothing
more is known.
Marshall M. McCall (M5/1.3), son of John McCall (M6/1.1) and
Elizabeth Thomas McCall (T6/1.1), was born about 1807 probably in
Tennessee. It is believed that his
family removed from there to Hinds County, Mississippi. Later he removed with his brothers to Red
River County, Texas.
The name of "Marshall McCall" appeared in a list of
"Addressees of Unclaimed Letters" prepared by the postmaster of
Clarksville, Texas July 1, 1848. An
unclaimed letter addressed to "Robert McCall" was being held at the
post office January 1, 1848.
On September 12, 1848 he and his brother Lorenzo G. McCall
(M5/1.3) purchased 740 acres from Ulysses Aguirre out of his land grant of a
league and a labore which had been granted to him in February 1837, according
to Red River County Deed Book H, page 119.
Consideration was $370, and they made payment with their notes.
Apparently they made no payments on the land and deeded it back
to Aguirre January 27, 1851 receiving their four notes back, according to Red
River County Deed Book I, page 166:
"State of Texas, County of Red River
Know all men by these presents that we Marshall M. McCall and
Lorenzo G. McCall, both of said county of Red River, for and in consideration
of the sum of $370 paid to us by Ulysses Aguirre of the County of Hopkins have
this day bargained, sold, conveyed and confirmed and do by these presents bargain,
sell, convey and confirm unto the aforementioned Aguirre all the right, title,
interest or claim which we have or could have to a certain tract or parcel of
land which we heretofore purchased of the said Aguirre containing 740 acres, it
being the balance of a survey of 840 acres upon the headright certificate of
the said Aguirre granted to him by the Board of Land Commissioners for said
County of Red River for one League and Labore of land No. 248 and dated
February 1837, said survey lying and situated north of Pecan Bayou and east of
Shugarts Creek . . .
Witnesses: Edward Shugart Lorenzo G. McCall
Eliza Jane
Taylor
Marshall M. McCall"
"Ulises Aiguar" appeared in the 1840 tax list of Red
River County, according to "1840 Census of the Republic of Texas" by
Gifford White. He paid taxes on 4,605
acres that had been surveyed for him.
He was a resident of Hopkins County when that county was formed from Red
River County. He was enumerated as the
head of a household in the 1850 census of Hopkins County:
"Aiguier,
Ulesses 45, born in South Carolina
Fanny
Ann 12, born in Texas
Margaret 7, born in Texas
John 5, born in Texas
Styles, John
B. 27, born in Arkansas
Esther 23, born in
Texas"
He continued to be a resident of Hopkins County February 25,
1852, according to the county court minutes.
Agnes "Aggie" Gates Ward (G2/1.1) reports that
Marshall M. McCall (M5/1.2) and Lorenzo G. McCall (M5/1.3) were involved in a
land dispute in north Texas. It is
suggested that they removed from Texas before the 1850 census.
An "M. M. McCall" appeared as the head of Household
717-717 in the 1860 census of Desoto County, Mississippi:
"McCall, M.
M. 40, born in Alabama, farmer,
$150
personal property,
Malinda 40, born in Alabama
Samuel W. 17, born in Alabama, farmer
Thomas
W. 15, born in Alabama, farmer

female
W.
R. 1, born in Mississippi, male

E. 20, born in Tennessee, male,
laborer"
Of Marshall M. McCall (M5/1.3) and descendants nothing more is
known.
Lorenzo G. McCall (M5/1.4), son of John McCall (M6/1.1) and
Elizabeth Thomas McCall (T6/1.1), was born about 1807 probably in
Tennessee. It is believed that his
family moved from there to Hinds County.
Later he removed with his brothers to Red River County. He appeared in the real estate records of
the county along with his brother Marshall M. McCall (M5/1.2) in land
transactions on September 28, 1848 and January 27, 1851.
Morris McCall, an attorney of Beaumont, Texas was identified as
a descendant of Lorenzo G. McCall (M5/1.3) "of Lufkin, Texas" by
John D. McCall (M3/2.5).
Dr. Charles Daniel McCall, a retired dentist of San Antonio
commissioned a history of his branch of the McCall family, according to a
letter written January 24, 1968 by Jonnie McCall, librarian of Kurth Memorial
Library of Lufkin, Texas. Jonnie McCall
was the wife of Talley McCall, son of James B. McCall who was born in
Mississippi in 1874 and removed to Angelina County, Texas. She wrote, "James B. McCall had a
brother named Lorenza [Alonzo?] McCall, another named John McCall and a sister
named Sarah McCall. Dr. Charles Daniel
McCall had a brother, Dr. Hugh S. McCall of Shreveport, Louisiana and a
sister, Miss Ina McCall, Route 1, Diboll, Texas."
Dr. Charles Daniel McCall was graduated in 1921 from Atlanta
Southern Dental College. He, Talley
McCall, Dr. Hugh S. McCall and Ina McCall were all deceased prior to 1988,
according to Homer G. McCall, a cousin and a family history researcher of
Lufkin. He stated in an interview
September 1, 1988 that he is attempting to locate a copy of the McCall history
commissioned by Dr. Charles Daniel McCall.
John McCall (M5/1.5), son of John McCall (M6/1.1) and Elizabeth
Thomas McCall (T6/1.1), was born about 1815, probably in Tennessee. Later his family removed to Hinds County,
Mississippi. Of this individual nothing
more is known.
A daughter, (M5/1.6), of John McCall (M6/1.1) and Elizabeth
Thomas McCall (T6/1.1), was born about 1818, probably in Tennessee. She was married about 1836, husband's name
Bay, according to John D. McCall (M3/2.5).
The Bay family was a neighbor to the McCall family in Charleston, South
Carolina in colonial times. The will of
"John Bay, attorney-at-law of Charleston, but at present at Ashepoo,"
was recorded in Charleston Will Book A, page 543. He died "at Ashepoo" December 12, 1784, leaving a
widow, Sarah Bay.
Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan (C2/10.4) who
researched the Bay family for many years reported that the only Bay family she
ever found in Tennessee was that of Thomas Bay who was recorded November 12,
1827 as the resident of the 10th District of Haywood County, Tennessee "on
the waters of Forked Deer Creek, along with some McCall families."
Blanche Maurie Duncum Monroe (D2/1.3) reported that once while
she was visiting John D. McCall (M3/2.5) he recalled a phrase regarding the Bay
family that members of the family had repeated, "San Antone Califrisco
Alla Busha Bay. That came out in one
independent expression, and then he turned his head and with a twinkle, said it
again. He had bad marks for the poor
lady [Mrs. Bay]; she had long, red hair, a high temper and was mean to us kids."
The only Bay household to appear in the 1850 census of
Mississippi was that of Chesley P. Bay in Pontotoc County.
Three Bay individuals appeared in the 1860 census of Warren
County, Mississippi. On page 105 was
Martha Bay, "45, born in Mississippi, living alone, 15,000 real estate,
$1,000 personal property, enumerated as Household 825-824. Her household adjoined that of Land Barfield
and Catherine Barfield, No. 824-816, located near Vicksburg, Mississippi. On page 104 was R. F. Bay, "25, born in
Mississippi, farmer $10,000 real estate, $2,500 personal property, Household
822-814. On page 89 was Martha Bay,
"23, born in Mississippi," living in the household of S. B. Wall.
No Bays were listed in the 1846 tax list of the counties of
Texas as tabulated by Marion Day Mullins.
G. B. Bay appeared as the head of a household in the 1860 census
of Hopkins County, Texas:
"Bay, G.
B. 32, born in Virginia, physician
Mary 34, born in Virginia
Lorenza 13, born in
Illinois"
The name "Lorenza" suggests a relationship with
"Lorenzo" G. McCall (M5/1.4).
Other family members to appear in the 1860 census of Texas
include:
