WASHINGTON COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI====

WAYNE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI====

Mary McCall was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1820 census of Wayne County:

"McColl, Mary  white female  over 45

                                  white female  16-26

                                  white female  10-16"

Since a "white female over 60" appeared in the 1830 enumeration of Duncan McCall's household, Mary McCall is suggested as the mother of:

        Duncan McCall                  born in 1779

Duncan McCall, believed to be a son of Mary McCall was born in 1779, according to the family bible record.  It is believed that he was married about 1812, wife's name Nancy who was born in 1790, according to her 1850 census enumeration.  In 1812 he appeared as a landowner in the Chickasawhay Purchase area, paying a tax on "1 white poll, 1 slave, $1.75 territory tax and a county tax of 87®Þ," according to the research of Robert P. Woodward, a descendant of Memphis, Tennessee.

He reappeared in the 1813 tax roll of Wayne County, Mississippi Territory, paying tax on "1 white poll, 1 slave, $1.16 territory tax and a county tax of 58®Þ."  He paid the said amounts in 1814.

He apparently served in the Mississippi militia in the War of 1812 and probably participated in the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815.  He appeared as the head of a household in the 1816 Territorial Census of Wayne County as:

"McCall, Duncan      white male over 21

                                          white female over 21

                                          white male under 21

                                          white female under 21

                                          white male under 21

                                          white male under 21"

Also enumerated in the 1816 census in Wayne County was Daniel McCall, thought to be the father of Hugh Jed McCall, living alone.

The 1817 tax roll of Wayne County lists Duncan McCall as paying tax on "1 white poll, 1 slave and 1.12® on real estate."

Duncan McCall reappeared in the 1819 taxpayers list, paying taxes on "1 white poll, 1 slave and an advalorem tax of $2.  Thomas McCall, unidentified, was also a taxpayer there in 1819.  He paid a tax on "1 white poll and $1.00 advalorem tax."

"Duncan McCall, Sr." appeared in the 1820 state census as the head of a household composed of "four males and five females."  Daniel McCall, thought to be the father of Hugh Jed McCall, was also enumerated in the 1820 census.  His household was listed as "one male and one female."

Duncan McCall was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1820 federal census of Wayne County:

        "McCole, Duncan     white male     26-45

                                           white female   26-45

                                           white male     10-16

                                          white female    0-10

                                          white female    0-10

                                           white male      0-10

                                           white female    0-10"

He received a land patent in 1821:

"Land Office, St. Stephens, Alabama, August 6, 1821.  This day Duncan McCall produced the Receiver's receipt for Forty-nine dollars and ninety-four & a quarter cent being in full payment of the fourth installment of NW qtr, Sec. 18, Township 6, Range 5 West by being allowed the deduction of 37® pcent which entitles him to a patent.

                                    Edward Fitshenry, Clerk

                                    for Jno. C. Pickens, Register"

He was received into the Philadelphius Presbyterian Church August 12, 1827, according to the church minutes.

Duncan McCall was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 federal census of Wayne County:

        "McCall, Duncan  white male    40-60

                                       white female  20-40

                                       white male    20-40

                                       white female  10-20

                                       white female  10-20

                                       white male     0-10

                                        white female   0-10

                                        white male     0-10"

                                        white female  over 60"

Duncan McCall reappeared as the head of a household in the 1840 federal census of Wayne County, page 242.  This enumeration showed him to be a military pensioner:

        "McCall, Duncan    white male    60-70

                                        white female  40-50

                                        white male    30-40

                                        white female  15-20

                                        white male    10-15

                                        white male     5-10

                                         white male     5-10"

Homer Gene McCall, a descendant, discovered an undated affidavit suggesting a pension application may have been filed by Duncan McCall about that time:

Duncan McCall was listed as the head of a household composed of "5 males and 2 females" in the 1841 state census.  His household was recorded in the 1845 state census of Wayne County as "4 males, 2 females."

Duncan McCall "departed this life the 17th day of July, 1845, age 66 years," according to the family bible of his son, Daniel Claudius McCall.  His death was also recorded in the minutes of the Philadelphius Presbyterian Church of Wayne County which have been deposited with The Historical Foundation, Montreat, North Carolina.

His slaves were partitioned to his heirs on August 12, 1846, according to probate records discovered by Homer Gene McCall, a descendant of Lufkin, Texas.  The division read:
