Huntingdon, Tenn, Aug. 3 (Special)--Dr. Joseph W. Courts of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Tillman Johnson of Salt Lake City were with their father at the time of his death, having remained with him throughout his illness.

Dr. McCall is of Scotch-Irish ancestry.  His great-grandfather, Lieut. John McCall, was one of Francis Marions's men, and his grandfather Andrew McCall was a sergeant in a South Carolina artillery unit in the War of 1812.  He himself was a surgeon in the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, U.S.A.  His son, Dr. James H. McCall, was in the Spanish-American War, and and his grandons, Joseph McCall and George and Jennings Courts were in the World War.  His maternal ancestors were named Todd and emigranted from Ireland to escape persecution, as they were strict Presbyterians.  He was the youngest son of 10 children and was born in Henderson County January 20, 1832 after the removal of his parents Andrew McCall and Jeanette Todd McCall, from their South Carolina home.  He was educated in the common schools and Decaturville Academy.  He began reading medicine under his brother, Dr. Henry McCall at Clarksburg, in 1853, graduated with the highest honors in a class of over four hundred from the University of Nashville in 1857, took a course in the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1869, a course in Vanderbilt in 1882 and received an honorary degree of M.D. from the University of Tennessee in 1883.  He took post-graduate work in Tulane University in the later years of his practice.

Dr. McCall is credited with advancing the first correct theory of the cause of malaria, which was later discovered by an Italian scientist to be the mosquito.  Dr. McCall is said to have done everything but actually discover the cause, his theory regarding it being absolutely correct.

He also discovered that 'milk sickness' was caused by the eating of 'white snake root' by milch cows, and after feeding this plant in its varied parts found that the flower was the part that caused the trouble.

He made valuable discoveries regarding trichinosis, and devoted a large part of his life to scientific research.  He was a lifelong Republican, but was never affiliated with any church, though he was noted for his benevolence and readiness to all those in distress."

Dear Dr. Bulloch,

Your very prompt reply to my inquirie to hand, and I do sincerely thank you, my good friend.

Yes, John McCall who married Charlotte Glenn is of my branch of the family.  He was my grandfather's brother.  It is his father that I am anxious to locate, find out who he was, as he is the beginning of our line.

From him, the said John McCall and Martha Hext, I have a complete record, but who he was, where he came from, etc, I do not know nor have I been able to find out.

I am ready to pay for any information of him as to his ancestry and history.  Salley does not know anything about this McCall, [but] is now on the lookout,

Will you be kind enough to tell me who Lawrence Hext that married Eliza Ashe is?  I cannot locate him.  A Dr. Powell married a sister of Lawrence Hext's wife.  Any of the descendants of said Lawrence Hext that you know of, I will be pleased to have their address, if you please, dear doctor.

Matthews for $100, according to Deed Book 3, page 198 of Jefferson County, Texas.  On March 9, 1852 he received half interest in a league of land, 2,214 acres, the headright of John N. Dyches (D6/1.2), issued by the board of land commissioners of Jefferson County for $250, according to Jefferson County Deed Book 7, page 56.  On February 11, 1857 he sold his interest in the Dyches headright, "same being unlocated," to Joseph W. Talbott for $340, according to Jefferson County Deed Book 7, page 57.  The land was later located in Williamson County, Texas.  John R. McCall gave a deed to Joseph W. Talbott February 11, 1857, according to Williamson County Deed Book 7, page 57.  He gave a bond for title September 17, 1877 to Andrew Roacha, according to Williamson County Deed Book 18, page 765.

On December 29, 1857 he received a transfer of 640 acres, a headright from William M. Kincaid of Guadalupe County, Texas for $1, according to Jefferson County Deed Book 7, page 283.  The headright had been issued by the board of land commissioners of Polk County, Texas.

Dr. John R. McCall was a minister in the Disciples of Christ and during the 1850s was manager of the City Hotel located at Congress and Pine in Austin.  He gave a $100 bond September 17, 1877 to guarantee title to land sold to the heirs of Andrew Roacha, according to Williamson County Deed Book 18, page 765.

Children born to Dr. John R. McCall include:

John Dodd McCall         born August 9, 1847

John Dodd McCall, son of Dr. John R. McCall, was born August 9, 1847.  He was brought to Texas by his father in 1854.  He attended school in Austin and then was graduated from Baylor University.  He enlisted in Confederate service and participated in the Battle of Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, Texas May 13, 1865, the day which heard the last shot fired in the Civil War.  The Confederates under Col. John S. Ford captured about 800 Federal soldiers and learned that Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered a month earlier on April 9.

John Dodd McCall received land in Williamson County deeded to him January 2, 1876 by America P. McCall, unidentified, but suggested as his mother, according to Williamson County Deed Book 18, page 58.  She and E. H. Holman were defendants in Case No. 4454 in Travis County District County against Thomas J. Pilgrim, plaintiff December 16, 1875.  The court decided in favor of the plaintiff, and they were required to pay "$351.71 in gold coin" in settlement.

John Dodd McCall deeded 350 acres on Battle Ground Creek located 12 miles east of Georgetown to C. L. Fowzer of Milam County for $875, according to Williamson County deed records.  "John D. McCall" was married June 2, 1876 to "C. L. Fawzer," according to adjoining Williamson County Marriage Book 17, page 279.

He deeded 100 acres in the Kincaid survey on Brushy Creek, four miles west of Round Rock, Texas for $200 February 4, 1878, according to Williamson County Deed Book 19, page 349.

John Dodd McCall was State Comptroller of Public Accounts from 1887 until 1896.  In this capacity he was the watchdog for the financing of the state capitol and for the elaborate transfer of land to the Capitol Syndicate [XIT (Ten in Texas) Ranch].  An article in November 15, 1888 edition of "The Texas News" published in Austin announced that back pay for the land surveyors was about to be paid.

"The men who surveyed the 3,000,000 acres conveyed to the Capitol Syndicate for building the new capitol will soon receive their pay.  Comptroller John D. McCall said today that the treasury has received $27,500 for the sale of 50,000 acres of the public domain sold to pay the cost of surveying the capitol lands.  He will therefore start issuing warrants to pay for the surveying done quite some time ago."

Following this he lived two years in San Antonio.  He was elected mayor of Austin in 1897 and served two terms.  He again served as State Comptroller in 1899.  He suffered a stroke in 1906 and died in Austin June 21, 1909.  He was a member of Disciples of Christ, Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias, a secret fraternal order founded in Washington in 1864.
