in 1883. He took post-graduate work in
Tulane University in the later years of his practice.
Dr. McCall is credited with
advancing the first correct theory of the cause of malaria, which was later
discovered by an Italian scientist to be the mosquito. Dr. McCall is said to have done everything
but actually discover the cause, his theory regarding it being absolutely
correct.
He also discovered that 'milk
sickness' was caused by the eating of 'white snake root' by milch cows, and
after feeding this plant in its varied parts found that the flower was the part
that caused the trouble.
He made valuable discoveries
regarding trichinosis, and devoted a large part of his life to scientific
research. He was a lifelong Republican,
but was never affiliated with any church, though he was noted for his
benevolence and readiness to all those in distress."

Dear Dr. Bulloch,
Your very prompt reply to my
inquirie to hand, and I do sincerely thank you, my good friend.
Yes, John McCall who married
Charlotte Glenn is of my branch of the family.
He was my grandfather's brother.
It is his father that I am anxious to locate, find out who he was, as he
is the beginning of our line.
From him, the said John McCall
and Martha Hext, I have a complete record, but who he was, where he came from,
etc, I do not know nor have I been able to find out.
I am ready to pay for any
information of him as to his ancestry and history. Salley does not know anything about this McCall, [but] is now on
the lookout,
Will you be kind enough to tell
me who Lawrence Hext that married Eliza Ashe is? I cannot locate him. A
Dr. Powell married a sister of Lawrence Hext's wife. Any of the descendants of said Lawrence Hext that you know of, I
will be pleased to have their address, if you please, dear doctor.
Cordially,
Hext McCall Perry,
M.D."
Lawrence Hext is identified as
a great-grandson of Philip Hext of Froome, Dorsetshire by "The Hext

William Osborn Hext were mentioned in a deed dated August 6, 1806 conveying
1,254 acres of land on Turtle Creek in Georgia. The land had been acquired by Philip Hext II, their grandfather,
June 3, 1763. Lawrence Hext and Sarah
C. Hext were witnesses at a wedding ceremony January 30, 1816 in Barnwell
County, South Carolina, according to "South Carolina Marriages, 1800-1810."

was an insurance broker at 77 Church Street in Charleston and was banished for
