Michael Whitmire, Jr., son of Michael Whitmire and Cathene
Whitmire, was born February 8, 1765, according to his tombstone in the
Daucusville, South Carolina cemetery.
He was probably born in South Carolina.
He was married about 1786, wife's name Nancy, according to the research
of Haskell Pruett.
He was enumerated in the 1790
census of Pendleton County, District 96, page 83 as the head of a household
composed of "two males over 16, one male under 16 and three females" in an
adjacent location to his father.
"Michael Whitmer," believed to be received a deed to 213 acres
for œ70 January 24, 1792 from Stephen Fuller, according to Pendleton District
Deed Book B, page 15.
Fuller had received the land located on the south side of the Saluda
River in a grant dated September 4, 1786.
On October 13, 1794 he purchased 147 acres "west of the old boundary" for
œ10, 11 shillings, according to Pendleton District Deed Book G, page 438.
He was mentioned in the will of his father written in 1795, and
he assisted in the inventory of his father's estate in Pendleton District March
24, 1797.
He appeared as the head of Household 296 in the 1800 census of
Pendleton District:

Michael Whitmire, Jr. died July 1, 1819, according to the
research of Lynda Dorene Whitmire Wright, however a Michael Whitmire, possibly,
reappeared in the 1820 census of Pendleton District as the head of a household
composed of:
"Whitmire, Michael
white male over 45
white female over 45"
He died before May 28, 1821 and was buried in the Whitmire family
cemetery near Pumpkintown on the Saluda River. Children born to Michael Whitmire, Jr.

Catherina Whitmire, daughter of
Michael Whitmire Jr. and Nancy Whitmire, was born about 1788, probably in
Pendleton District. She was
apparently the "white female, 10-16" who appeared in her father's household in
the 1800 census. She was married
about 1806 to Rev. Allen Robinson.
He conveyed land on the South Saluda River near Carpenter's Creek adjoining that
of Martin Whitmire August 30, 1838 to his son Randolph Robinson.
He died March 28, 1854.
Thirteen children were born to them, including:
Anna Robinson

Randolph Robinson
born about 1817
Anna Robinson, daughter of Rev. Allen Robinson and Catherina
Whitmire Robinson, was born about 1816 in Pendleton District.
She was married about 1834 to Jeremiah Whitmire [unidentified].
She was mentioned in the will of her father which was probated in Pickens County
April 7, 1855. They were received
June 9, 1860 by letter at Ebenezer Baptist Church at Traveler's Rest, South
Carolina. She died April 3, 1861,
according to the church minutes.
Children born to Jeremiah Whitmire and Anna Robinson Whitmire are
unknown.
Jeremiah Whitmire, son of Michael Whitmire Jr. and Nancy
Whitmire, was born about 1794, probably in Pendleton District. He was enumerated as the head of a
household in the 1820 census of Pendleton District, page 86.
The family was rendered as:
"Whitmire, Jeremiah

He sold 45 acres of land "on the Saluda" to his brother Michael
Whitmire III in 1840, according to Pickens County Deed Book D-1, page 336.
He sold an additional 86 acres to R. G. Whitmire (unidentified) in 1842,
according to Pickens County Deed Book D-1, page 584.
In the same year he sold 30 acres to Odom Cox, according to Pickens
County Deed Book D-1, page 584.
"J. M. Whitmire," perhaps, was a witness to the will of Michael
Whitmire III April 16, 1870 in Greenville County.
Elizabeth Whitmire, daughter of Michael Whitmire Jr. and Nancy
Whitmire, was born about 1795, probably in Pendleton District. She was married about 1814, husband's
name Findlay.
Rebecca Whitmire, daughter of Michael Whitmire Jr. and Nancy
Whitmire, was born about 1797, probably in Pendleton District.
She was married about 1817, husband's name Finlay.
Michael Whitmire III, son of Michael Whitmire Jr. and Nancy
Whitmire, was born June 27, 1798, probably in Pendleton District.
He was married about 1820 to Mary Finlay who was born May 3, 1804, according to
Lynda Dorene Whitmire Wright, a descendant.
Mary Finlay was possibly a sister to the husband of Rebecca Whitmire.
Michael Whitmire III was enumerated as the head of a household in
the 1820 census of Pendleton District, page 86, listed as:
"Whitmire, Michael
white male 18-26
white female 26-45
one slave"
Located nearby were the households of "Christopher Whitmire, Samuel Whitmire, Jeremiah Whitmire and Christopher Whitmire.
Michael Whitmire III sold 100 acres of land that he had inherited
to his brother Martin Whitmire May 28, 1821. The land was located on the South Fork
of Saluda River and adjoined the land of R. M. Earles, John Hunt and Martin
Whitmire, according to Pendleton District (Pickens County) deed records.
In 1842 he sold to H. Cleveland Hunt 230 acres on the Saluda
River, according to Pickens County deed records. In the same year he sold 26 acres on Crooked Creek to James
McAdam.
He appeared as the head of a household in 1850 census of
Greenville County, South Carolina.
He was shown as a farmer with $2,500 in real estate. Mary Finlay Whitmire died August 3, 1869, and he was
remarried a few months later to Martha Langford who was born in 1803.
Haskell Pruett shows her year of birth as 1814.
He wrote his will April 16, 1870:
"I, Michael Whitmire, of the County of Greenville, State of South
Carolina, being of a sound mind and disposing memory and understanding do make
this my last will and testament in the manner and form following:
Item 1st: All my just debts to be paid.
Item 2nd: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Martha Whitmire
the use of all my property both real and personal wheresoever lying or found to
dispose of any part she may think best and manage the rest as she wishes during
her natural lifetime or so long as she remains my widow, in case she marries
then she has what she had before our marriage, she being the one to say what
that was, and the rest sold and equally divided between my children to wit: My
deceased son Washington Whitmire's children one child's part and my deceased
daughter Elizabeth Singleton's children one child's part and my son Waddy
Whitmire and my daughter Louise Hester each a child's part with the exception of
twenty dollars which I will to my two grandsons, Michael Whitmire and Michael
Hester--ten each and the part reserved for my wife in case of her marriage be
divided as above if she dies my widow.
Item 3rd: I appoint E. A. Kelly and Samuel Tinsley my executors
with power to turn over to the person having the minor grandchildren in charge
should there be any at time of sale and distribution.
Item 4th: I revoke all former wills by me heretofore made this

In the presence of
Michael Whitmire
J. M. Whitmire

The Rev. W. P. Meadows wrote in 1904 an article for "Southern
Christian Advocate" about a visit he made in the home of William Carlisle
Whitmire in 1877:
"TRUE STORY FROM REAL LIFE
Rev. W. P. Meadows Writes of His Experience
On the Walhalla Circuit 27 Years Ago
I have just finished Dr. J. L. Stokes' article in the Methodist
Quarterly Review, 'A South Carolina Apostle,' and it has inspired me to write
the following sketch:
On January 13, 1877, a cold, rainy
day, a little after dark--and it was very dark and rainy--I rode up to the gate
of Wm. Whitmire, in Oconee County, South Carolina, and hailing, sat for a moment
on my pony, which I had ridden 125 miles, this being the first home I entered on
my first charge, and my coming had not been announced.
But it was only a moment before the gate flew open by the energy of a sweet
little girl (Lou Ruff), and I was asked to ride in.
I was met in the yard by Brother Frank Whitmire, a son of Bro.
William, who said 'I suppose this is our new preacher?' Receiving an answer in the affirmative,
he said, 'Light and go in; I will take your horse.' On entering the home I found myself alone before a bright,
hot, cheerful fire. The family was
at supper in the kitchen.
In short time a tall, straight man, with long, gray hair, blue
eyes, a good solid face, and about 81 years old, entered, wiping his mouth and
sucking his teeth. On my saying I
suppose this is Brother Whitmire, he replied, 'Yes, this is what's left of him.'
I said, 'My name is Meadows; I am your new preacher.'
His reply was, 'Well, set down, brother.'
I said, 'We are having some bad weather, Brother Whitmire.' In rather gruff tones, with his head down, he replied, 'It's
no worse than we deserve.' I was so
taken aback by his manner and reply that I decided to let him take the lead in
the conversation. After a profound
silence of some time he said, "Well, I don't know what the Bishop means, no how;
last year we had a preacher that couldn't give us the sacrament, nor marry our
young people, nor baptize our children, and now he has sent us another right
young one. Well, we are ruined.' I told him that I supposed the Bishop
had done what he thought was best, and perhaps we would get on all right. By this time Mr. Perry, his son-in-law,
came in and after we were made known to each other said, "It don't seem that the
conference cares anything for us at all.
I was in hopes we would get a man this time with some age and
experience.'
This made me very anxious to see some of the women folks, for I
was much in need of sympathy. I did
not have to wait long, for Sister Whitmire soon came in--a rather tall, motherly
looking old lady 75 years old. She
wore a long homespun bonnet, with pasteboard stays in it, after the fashion of
those days in that part of the country.
After speaking to me she took her seat in the corner, bonnet pulled well down
over her face, and began to fill her pipe from a twist of home raised
tobacco--call hank in that section.
I noticed that she glanced at me a few times from under her bonnet, and when the
pipe was filled she dipped it in the hot embers, pushed back her bonnet a
little, and made the smoke boil from a few puffs and then said, 'Ah, law me,
what in the world is to become of us! Another
young prescher!' I was musing while
the fire on the hearth burned, and I may as well say my heart was becoming hot
within me, and I said, 'You pay a preacher very little on this charge, and if a
man with a family were sent here you would let him suffer. Our preachers don't travel long before
they get married, and in order that you may have a single man he must be a young
man. I suppose that is why you are
being afflicted with young preachers.'
They all agreed that while they had not thought about it that way, there
might be something in that theory.
I was soon invited to the kitchen for supper, the rest having all
finished. It was a good supper and
greatly enjoyed--fresh pork, cornbread, biscuits, rye fritters, bake sweet
potatoes of fine variety, Georgia reds, delicious firm butter, fresh buttermilk,
coffee, honey and the honeycomb.
(I always got a good bill of fare at this home, the best of any place on
the charge.) I had a good night's
rest in a good feather bed, with plenty of covering, all clean and nice.
After breakfast next morning, when about ready to leave for my
first appointment of the charge, which was at Bear-Pen Gap, hard by the
Whitewater Falls, Bro. Whitmire said, 'Well, brother, when you want to come
back, and if I am not at the house, put up your horse and feed him; you will find corn and fodder there. You needn't come back 'til you get
ready.' It wasn't long before I was
ready to go back, even with such an invitation as that. And I was often ready. For I found a father and mother and
brothers and sisters in that home--my home free of charge whenever I wished to
stop there.
Sequel--It was only a few days 'til conference in Columbia, where
Bishop Doggett was to preside.
My few belongings all packed ready for shipment, and left in Frank's care
to be sent to me if I were moved, pony bridled and saddled, and a few things in
my saddle bags to be carried with me back to my brother's home, where I started
out, where I was to leave my pony while I was in conference.
I sat for a few moments with Brother and Sister Whitmire in the
same room where we first met, ready to say good-bye. Brother Whitmire was the first to speak. Said he, 'You have been here a year, you
have done well, and we like you.
Tell the Bishop to send you back if he can.'
Sister Whitmire said, 'Yes, we feel just like one of our own boys was
going away.' Her apron served
instead of a handkerchief to wipe away the tears from her eyes, while those from
the honest blue eyes of the old man got away without assistance, and chased each
other over the furrows in his closely shaven face. With difficulty I succeeded in saying good-bye. With saddlebags in hand I proceeded to
my pony, mounted and rode away. I
never saw them any more. But we
shall meet again, and 'There will be no night there.'"
He died there after 1880.
