Marcus E. Whitmire was the subject of a column written
by Dayton Kelley, Mary Hardin-Baylor College which appeared in the July 11,
1965 edition of "Waco Tribune-Herald:"
"We were reminded of old Chalk Bluff, Texas recently by a
little booklet carrying the name of M. E. Whitmire, dealer in general
merchandise, Chalk Bluff, Texas. Dated
1929, the booklet is Dr. L. D. LeGear's 'Scientific Treatise on Dairy Cows,
Horses, Hogs, Sheep and Poultry.' The
name LeGear is a famous one in farm and ranch circles--or at least it was back
then--manufacturing all kinds of livestock remedies.
Uncle Mark, as he was affectionately known, was the owner of the
small general merchandise store which sat almost under the bluff and just
across the road from his spacious home.
Here the tenant farmers who worked the Whitmire land could buy food,
clothing and a few of the luxuries of those days.
Though it has been gone now these many years, there are hundreds
of people who remember it because their fathers worked at one time some of the
hundreds of acres of land owned by Mr. Whitmire or lived in one of the dozens
of houses which dotted his spacious holdings.
They remember too, Uncle Mark as he drove up and down the roads
around Nolanville in his 1929 black Buick, one of the few on the road in those
days. A rather short man, Mr. Whitmire
could be seen driving and peering through the spokes of the steering wheel
which seemed almost too big for him to handle.
They remember Aunt Lula, as Mrs. Whitmire was called, who lived
to be nearly a hundred [?] and rarely missed going to church at Nolan Valley
Baptist Church. They buried Aunt Lula
from that building a few years ago just as they had Uncle Mark many years
before [?].
The Whitmires reared a number of children, now scattered all the
way from Texas to California. The one
we know best is W. S. Whitmire, recently removed from Killeen to Belton. The old store was just about gone by the
time we came along, but the impression remains.
One story we remember in particular concerns some young boys who
sneaked under the store, bored a hole in the floor up into a barrel of sugar,
drained out a bucketful and then plugged the hole with a corncob. Thereafter when they wanted a little sugar
for something, they simply unplugged the seemingly endless supply and let a
little drain out."
