"Jack Whitmire never ran out of tall tales to relate to his grandchildren.  He told many stories about his ancestors and of life as it used to be in the mountains.  One night a panther was accidentally driven in with the sheep, and he often told the story of the exciting time.  Like most of his neighbors Jack was a farmer and for many years he hand split white oak logs and made or repaired split bottom chairs.  He trimmed down the white oak strips using only his pocketknife until they were finely dressed.  One of his prized possessions was an old Victrola which he protected with a sheet tied with a ribbon.  He did not allow youngsters to play the Victrola, but he loved music and would willingly play the old hymns and country records such as those recorded by the Carter family.  He was a member of Old Toxaway Baptist Church for 62 years and was buried in the Whitmire family cemetery at Quebec.  In his honor a reunion is held at the Quebec Community Center on the last Sunday of August each year, and hundreds of his descendants attend."
