daughter of Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr., was born about 1807. She was married December 31, 1828 to George
W. Adair. According to Buncombe County, North Carolina marriage records,
Eleanor Whitmire, "daughter of Henry Whitmire of Buncombe County was
married December 25, 1828 to George W. Adair of Pickens District, South
Carolina." "Eleanor
Adear" was mentioned in her father's will dated June 17, 1838.
Andrew P. Whitmire, son of
Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr., was born about 1810 "in South
Carolina". He was married about
1830, wife's name Elizabeth. About 1834
he was the recipient of a deed of 65 acres on the French Broad River from his
father. The deed was recorded September
1, 1838, according to Buncombe County Deed Book Page 21, page 315.
He was mentioned in the both

Galloway. The research of Katherine Marie "Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli shows
the husband's name as William J. Galloway and states that he was born February
16, 1815. She was mentioned in the will
of her father written in 1837 as the recipient of $1 and again in the will of
1838. She died March 2, 1891, and he
died June 26, 1895.

Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr., was born in 1816. She was married about 1834, husband's name Trammel. She had received an inheritance, according
to her father's will written in 1838.

Bill" Whitmire, son of Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. and Sallie
Elizabeth Galloway Whitmire, was born July 5, 1824 in South Carolina. He was married about 1843 to Rebecca
Gillespie who was born July 19, 1819.
He enlisted in an infantry company during the Civil War, but was sent
home because he was so fat, according to the research of Katherine Marie
"Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli hence the nickname "Fat
Bill." He died December 31,
1872. Sallie Elizabeth Galloway
Whitmire and her children filed suit in 1885 to have the land they inherited
from Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. partitioned. She died September 6, 1892.
They were buried in the Whitmire family cemetery at Rosman.

was married to General Jackson Whitmire and a half-sister to Dovie L. Murray who
was married to John C. Whitmire and a half-sister to J. C. G. Murray who was
married to Camely Hattie Whitmire, daughter of Henry DeCalvie Whitmire. He was a party to the partition suit filed
in 1885.

John C. "Honest John"
Whitmire, son of Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. and Sallie Elizabeth
Galloway, was born March 22, 1828 in Buncombe County. He was married about 1848 to Elizabeth "Betsy" Owen who
was born November 26, 1826. They were
enumerated in the 1860 census of Henderson County, North Carolina. He was a charter member of Oak Grove Baptist
Church and served as its first clerk.
He was a stone mason. In a
letter written to Roy Whitmire by Charles Washington Henderson he was described
as being one of the best bible scholars in the community. He died January 16, 1903, and she died May
23, 1912. They were buried in the
Whitmire family cemetery near Rosman.

"Henderson County Heritage" Katherine Marie "Kathy" Sanford
Petrucelli stated, "I had always wondered how my great-great-grandfather
came to be known as "Honest John."
From accounts of those who remembered him the title simply described the
man who begame so well known for his honesty that it became a part of his
name."

Gloucester community of Henderson County which later lay in Transylvania County
upon its formation in 1861, according to Katherine Marie "Kathy"
Sanford Petrucelli writing in "Henderson County, North Carolina
Heritage." He was married July 3,
1873 to Narcissa Elvira Hines, who was born March 23, 1854 to Allen Logan Hines,
a Civil War veteran and Elizabeth "Betsie" Galloway Hines. She died
January 4, 1907 and was buried in the Whitmire family cemetery near Quebec. He
was remarried about 1908 to Cora S. Whitmire, daughter of James Marion Whitmire
and Nancy A. Young Whitmire. She was
born May 21, 1871 and died October 7, 1932.
He died January 31, 1938 and was buried in the family cemetery near
Quebec.
Katherine Marie
"Kathy" Sanford Petrucelli wrote:
"Jack Whitmire never ran
out of tall tales to relate to his grandchildren. He told many stories about his ancestors and of life as it used
to be in the mountains. One night a panther
was accidentally driven in with the sheep, and he often told the story of the
exciting time. Like most of his
neighbors Jack was a farmer and for many years he hand split white oak logs and
made or repaired split bottom chairs.
He trimmed down the white oak strips using only his pocketknife until
they were finely dressed. One of his
prized possessions was an old Victrola which he protected with a sheet tied
with a ribbon. He did not allow
youngsters to play the Victrola, but he loved music and would willingly play
the old hymns and country records such as those recorded by the Carter
family. He was a member of Old Toxaway
Baptist Church for 62 years and was buried in the Whitmire family cemetery at
Quebec. In his honor a reunion is held
at the Quebec Community Center on the last Sunday of August each year, and
hundreds of his descendants attend."

Whitmire, Jr.. The March 1, 1907 edition of "Sylvan Valley News"
revealed that "Ranzy Whitmire bought a lot and house from A. M. White in
Rosman."
Following the death of Emily
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Chapman Whitmire February 11, 1920 he was
remarried to Anna Morgan Powell who was born March 17, 1886. She died September
22, 1955, and he died November 16, 1963.
They were buried in Toxaway Baptist Church Cemetery.

Evelyn Lucille Hazen Petrucelli in Erie, Pennsylvania about 1946. They moved to Rutherford County, North
Carolina in 1975. In 1986 they lived in
Forest City, North Carolina near where her great-great-grandfather Christopher
Columbus Whitmire, Jr. settled about 1826.
She has become pre-eminent in
the Whitmire family research and has prepared several articles dealing with the
history of the family for historical publications. It is through her courtesy that much of the material on
Christopher Columbus Whitmire, Jr. and his descendants appears in this
manuscript.
