On  November 30, 1848, Andrew M. Gooing married Miss Areminta Barnett, according to File 2020, Perry County, Ala-bama marriage records.  She was the daughter of Thomas Bar-nett and Phebary Bishop Barnett.

According to the 1850 census, Andrew and Areminta Gooing resided in Perry County, Alabama in Perryville Beat, in the eastern part of the county.  Andrew is listed as being 26 years old, a pumpmaker, Areminta is 24, and they have one child, William, age 1.

In 1858, the estate of Thomas Barnett, Areminta's father, was settled.  In Minute Book I 1858, page 43, State of Alabama, Perry County, we find Areminta and her husband mentioned. Their part was $1,272.95.  Having received $342.53 prior to the settlement, were due $990.42.

Shortly thereafter, Andrew and Areminta Gooing came to Lou-isiana, we suppose, with a caravan of settlers.  They first lived at Old Shiloh in Union Parish.  Ernest Edward Ballard, grand-son of Andrew M. Gooing, told me that Andrew M. Gooing had a gin, a blacksmith shop, and that he was a carpenter.

Martha A. Gooing Ballard's letter states: 'Father was a farmer, wood workman, a fine blacksmith, and a mason.'

We have a certified copy of Conveyance Record K, page 190‑-191, Union Parish Deed, dated February 27, 1863, a deed from Alfred Honeycutt to 'A. M. Goings' for 360 acres of land. This deed confirms the following story that was told to me. Alfred Honeycutt had a son, Bob, who was of army age. Honey-cutt could not bear to see his son to go to war.  He told Andrew M. Gooing he would deed 360 acres to him if he would take the boy's place.  Andrew agreed to do this.  On the day of his en-listment, the deed was made.  They moved from the Old Shiloh to the Honeycutt place on DeLoutre.  That is how the Ballard homeplace was acquired.

Following is Andrew M. Gooing's Confederate States war record, taken from Booth's 'Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Commands,' Book 1, Page 44:

'Guing, Andrew M. Pvt. Co. I, 31st Infantry.  Enlisted February 27, 1863, Monroe, Louisiana.  Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, captured and paRolld at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863.

The photostat of Andrew M. Gooing's CSA record shows the same dates as above. It shows he enlisted for three years, or the war. There are two interesting notes; 'he has never been paid,' and 'the duplicate roll carries his name as Going instead of Gooing.'

Martha A. Gooing Ballard's letter gives us the following: 'Father went through the Vicksburg hard battle and was wounded in head and shoulder which shortened his life . . .'

Aunt Rosalie Ballard White has heard Areminta Gooing say that during the war, in the middle of the night, some Yankees came and burned the cotton gin and cotton bales.  They took all their chickens, livestock and bed covering.  [The gin was on that part of the place they call the 'old sand field.']

Andrew M. Gooing returned from the war on a horse someone had let him have.  It is said he was so ill when he returned that he could hardly climb down from the horse.  He died December 9, 1867.

On September 14, 1957, I visited Andrew M. Gooing's grave at Old Tennessee Graveyard in Union Parish, Louisiana.  E. E. Ballard took me there.  The gravestone is Masonic, shaped like a pyramid and in perfect condition. On the side opposite the Masonic insignia there is sculptured an ear of corn.  The front of the stone is marked 'Andrew M. Gooing Born November 15, 1823, Died December 9, 1867.  Erected by his Wife.'

Andrew M. Gooing deeded the 360 acres to William Sanders Gooing, his son whom he had taught the carpentry trade. Wil-liam took over the shop after his father's death.  E. E. Ballard told me that 'Uncle Will' could build anything and was espe-cially good at cabinet work.  He also stated that William S. Gooing built the Gus Hartman House at Farmerville.  In 1890, William S. Gooing was murdered by a man named Deas.  His death, we are told, caused Areminta, his mother to grieve for him for the rest of her life.  William S. Gooing's grave is adjacent to his father's and is marked.

William S. Gooing left the place to Martha Angeline Gooing, our grandmother, who had married John Ballard.  This caused friction in the family, so Martha A. and John Ballard put the land up for sale and John Ballard bought it in.

Areminta made her home with Martha and John Ballard.  I have heard my father speak of her many times and said he had ridden into town with her to get her pension check.

This pension check was a great puzzlement to me. I had been told it was a CSA widow's pension. I made many fruitless efforts to verify it. The CSA Pension Act was not approved until 1898 ‑ then, one day, upon rereading Martha A. Ballard's letter, it occurred to me that perhaps it was a widow's pension from Andrew's service in the Mexican War.  This proved to be true, and as a consequence, I was able to acquire from National Archives Andrew's military records which gave me much valuable information.

Areminta Barnett Gooing was well educated.  We are told she was a school teacher.  She was a Baptist; her bible was beautifully kept, and she wrote exceedingly well.

We found the following in her handwriting:

"Areminta Gooing                                                            Aug. the 9, 1900

Back to the old home viewing scenes of childhood

There is where I know no care or pain

There in my childish glee

Under the woodland tree

0, how I long to go to the old home once again

Though I am old now,

I love to linger on happy thoughts of bygone days

When through the [illegible], I roamed

Far from my dear old home

Gathering the scented flowers that grew along the way

Now I am alone, no loving hands ... "

That is all that is on the scrap of paper, but it does give one insight to the character of Areminta Barnett Gooing.

Areminta died March 4, 1902, while she was visiting in the home of her daughter, Phebery Jane Gooing Tugwell [Mrs. George Tugwell].  She is buried at Blanchard Springs, Ar-kansas, where she died.  I have been told her grave is marked.  [Her grave was found in 1990 by Carroll Heard Goyne, Jr, Foundation Editorial Boardmember of Shreveport.  It is located in an almost abandoned wooded cemetery in Section 32, Town-ship 19S, Range 3W in Union County.  The cemetery is about 1/4 mile northwest of the present Blanchard Springs Church.  A smaller wooded cemetery is about 1/2 mile south of this one, according to James Thomas Ballard.]

Blanchard Springs is in Union County, Arkansas.  The old house in which Areminta Gooing, Martha A. and John Ballard lived, burned in November, 1955.  At the time it was occupied by E. E. Ballard and his wife, Ossie.  The 360 acres of the old home place presently belong to E. E. Ballard."

Arementa Barnett Gooing was the daughter of Thomas Barnett and Pheraby Bishop Barnett, according to the research of a great-grandson, James Thomas Ballard, a Foundation member of Vicksburg, Mississippi.  He wrote:

"Andrew Martin Gooing came to Union Parish as a member of the Thomas Barnett family.  Thomas Barnett was born March 6, 1786 and died in Perry County, Alabama March 3, 1857, leaving a widow and seven daughters and a substantial estate, according to Perry County Probate Book 1, page 43.  His daughters were:

He was listed in the 1830 census of Jackson County, northern District, page 128, as the head of a household adjoining the location of William Gowen.  The family was composed of:

                William Gowen                    born in 1830

William Gowen, only known son of Martin Gowen and Rachel Simpson Gowen, was born in 1830 in Alabama, probably Jackson County.  He was married at age 16, wife's name Elizabeth.

William Gowen was the only member of the family to head a household in Jackson County in the 1860 census.  His household, No. 71-71, Division 4, was enumerated June 4, 1860:

"Gowan,                William                30, born in Alabama, blacksmith, $65

In the Jackson County Court records, term of October 1861, it was reported that "William Gowan" of District 17 had volunteered to serve in the Mead Company of the Twentieth Alabama Infantry Regiment and had left his home in October 1861.  The record states that he had left behind "his wife, age 35, a daughter, age 16 and a son, age 10", according to "Valley Leaves of Alabama," a genealogical publication.  Elizabeth Gowen participated in a distribution of $700 worth of provisions which were doled out in District 17 by the county.

William Gowan appeared in the Jackson County Court records, term of November 1861.  The record stated that "William Gowan of Nashville, Alabama" was a volunteer in Confederate service and that he had left a wife and one child, age 11, who were in need of assistance.  It is assumed that Alivera Gowan, at 16 by this time, had married or was away with relatives.

On October 13, 1862 the Jackson County Court approved a list of Confederate volunteers from Jackson County whose families were in need of assistance.  "William Gowin" was included in the list from District 17 of the county.  The record mentioned that his wife and one child were left.  They were assisted in a share of "50 sacks of salt" provided by the state of Alabama, according to "Valley Leaves of Alabama," Volume 8.  Apparently William Gowen died during the Civil War.

"Elizabeth Gowans," widow, age 41, appeared in the 1870 census of Jackson County, living in District 4, Subdivision 1 in Long Island, Alabama.  The household, No. 72-73, was enumerated as:

"Gowans,             Elizabeth                41, born in Alabama, illiterate, $100

                                                                                                                                real estate, $150 personal prop

                                                                                                                                erty

David A.                  9, born in Alabama"

It is believed that children born to William Gowen and Elizabeth Gowen include:

                Alivera Gowen                    born in 1846

                  [son]                                                                     born in 1851

David A. Gowen                    born in 1861

Alivera Gowen, believed to be a daughter of William Gowen and Elizabeth Gowen, was born in 1846.  She appeared as a 16-year-old in the 1860 census of Jackson County living in her parents' household.  Nothing more is known of this individual.

A son born in 1851 was the couple's second known child.  Of this individual nothing is known.

Mary Ella Gowin, daughter of Samuel B. Gowin and Mary Ann “Polly” Wood Gowin, was born in March 1858 in Mississippi.  In 1870 Mary Ella Gowin appeared in her parents' household in the federal census of Van Zandt County.

Sharp and M. Nissa Herring.  He was a grandson of George W. Sharp and Artemisia Acker.

They were enumerated in the 1910 census of Kaufman County, Texas.  They removed to Henderson County, Texas where “Robert A. Sharp was waylaid, robbed and killed after selling a $35 bale of cotton in 1914,” according to a family legend.

Details of his murder were reported in the “Athens Weekly Review” of Athens, Texas:

Shirley A. Hardee did a detailed investigation of the murder and wrote January 17, 2002 concering it:

“As for the incident of Robert Alexander “Zan” Sharp's death, I have researched it and found some very good information on it.  First, I collected the newspaper articles about the man that mur-dered him.  The papers for that particular time [1914] were missing.  But, J. P. Gray was on the run for Sharp's murder and committed another murder, resulting in his cap-ture.  The news-paper articles, 13 years after the death of Rob-ert Alexander Sharp gave a lot of good information on his death.

This information helped me locate court records that gave more names and dates and details.  And, the information from the court records enabled me to contact some descendants of J. P. Gray, who filled me in on more details.

Here are the newspaper articles, followed by the court records:

“Athens Weekly Review,” January 27, 1927

‘J.P. Gray, Who Escaped Jail Here, Captured Following Murder of Son-in-law

J.P. Gray, under sentence in this county for murder was cap-tured at Lonview last night, according to a message received here today by Sheriff Morrow.  Gray was captured following the killing of his son-in-law there, and he stands charged with that offense also.

Gray was convicted in this county for the murder of Zan Sharp and sentenced to ninety-nine years in the pen.  The case was appealed and, pending the appeal, Gray was kept in jail here.  He escaped from the jail after being confined there for four months and has since been at large.

Sheriff Morrow had previously located Gray in North Carolina, but Governor Ferguson refused to pay his expenses to that State to bring him back to Texas.  The sheriff said that his son-in-law brought Gray from North Carolina a few months ago to live with him.  According to officers of Gregg County, Gray mur-dered his son-in-law in order to secure his insurance.  The of-ficers there have asked that Sheriff Morrow come to Longview and identify the prisoner.

Gray, with his son, was convicted here for the murder of Zan Sharp.  The murder occurred just south of town, and Sheriff Morrow traced the guilty parties to their home by means of wagon tracks.  The sheriff secured the stick of stove wood with which Sharp was killed and kept it concealed until the case was brought to trial.

J. P. GRAY BROUGHT BACK HERE FOR SENTENCE

J. P. Gray, who escaped from jail here in 1915, following his conviction for murder, was brought back to Athens Saturday afternoon by Sheriff J. P. Morrow.  Gray has been in the Long-view jail for the past few weeks.  He was brought back here to receive his sentence.  He escaped jail here pending a motion for a new trial and notwithstanding his conviction, sentence was never passed upon him.  He was sentenced by Judge Dent Tuesday.  His attorneys, Sam Holland and Richard Sigler, gave notice of appeal.

Seldom has the return of an individual attracted the attention that Gray did on Saturday.  Sheriff Morrow arrived with him on the afternoon Cotton Belt [train] Saturday, and they went im-mediately to a restaurant for dinner.  Information was soon noised around that Gray was here and a tremendous crowd gathered at the White Swan Cafe to see the aged man.  Gray recognized many of the people who came to shake hands with him and as the crowd grew larger, he said to Sheriff Morrow "that evidently the people believed a wild man had come to town."

Gray is a small man, gray headed and has a gray moustache.  Those who knew him during his stay in Athens say that eleven years has brought little change to him.

He was taken to the local jail where he will be confined until his case is disposed of.  The crowd followed him about the square and to jail so anxious were they to see him.  Many who did not know Gray, but had read of his case, were anxious to see him.

When first arrested at Longview, Gray stoutly maintained that his name was Smith, but after Sheriff Morrow visited Long-view and identified him, he admitted that his name was Gray.  Gray was taken into custody at Longview in connection with a murder there, but local officers do not believe there is sufficient evidence in the later case to convict him.

“Athens Weekly Review,” March 17, 1927

GRAY GIVEN 15 YEARS IN LONGVIEW COURT

J. P. Gray, who was recently sentenced to ninety-nine years in the penitentiary for murder in this county, after he had escaped from jail here and remained at large for fifteen years, was given an additional sentence at Longview on Friday.  Gray was sen-tenced to fifteen years there for the murder of his son-in-law.

The return of Gray to this county several weeks ago attracted wide attention.  He was arrested at Longview following the death of his son-in-law, and Sheriff Morrow went there and identified him.  Gray escaped from the old jail here while a motion for a new trial was pending, and therefore sentence had not been passed on him.

COURT RECORDS

December 20, 1913

J. P. Gray was taken to court by the state for unlawfully selling liquor to E. L. Sharp.  [E.L. Sharp was probably one of Robert Alexander “Zan” Sharp's older twin boys, Lonnie.]

December 1, 1914

J. P. Gray was taken to court by the state for unlawfully engag-ing in, persuing and following the occupation and business of selling liquor.

December 17, 1914

J. P Gray, Si Gray, and Mack Gray on this day, killed R. A. Sharp by beating and striking him with a club and some blunt instrument, and stabbing and cutting him with a knife and some sharp object.

March 3, 1915

J. P. Morrow swore that William Smith [aka J. P. Gray] lied under oath.

February 15, 1927

J. P. Gray filed an informal appeal on his case, but was left in jail until the appeal could come to court.

February 1927

J. P. Gray filed a formal appeal on his case on the following grounds:

  1. Insufficient verdict by jury to pass guilty sentence by

failing  to clearly state amount of punishment.

  1. No records or evidence to show that court gave written instructions before deliberation
  2. Court does not have authority to pass sentence at this

time because no notice was given to defendent that

sentence was to be entered against him at the said

       time.

March 31, 1927

C. C. Pharris confirmed formally that  "the defendent in the above entitled and numbered case". . . . . . "and that the said defendent J. P. Gray is now confined in the County jail of Gregg County at Longview, Texas".

A great-granddaughter of J. P. Gray contacted me.  We shared information.  She did some more research and shared the fol-lowing with me:

1.  She had heard about the incident, but it was very hush-hush in the family.

2.  J. P. Gray did not serve the 15 years;.he told one of his sons that he "got out on the bible"  in three years.

3.  The son-in-law he killed in Longview was named Renfroe.  He is said to have killed Renfroe because Gray's daughter was run over by a train, and was he was told that someone saw Ren-froe push her in front of it.  Even though the newspaper states he killed him for his insurance.

4.  The Gray's killed Sharp because J. P. Gray had lost his mule in a card game, and refused to give it up.  Sharp had evidently gone after it.

5.  The great-granddaughter also stated that family said Gray was a gentle kind man that never raised his voice in anger.”

Shirley Hardee reported, “Mary moved to Kaufman, Texas to live near her children and died there of pneumonia at an old age.”

Lear Belle Adams, daughter of John Quincy Adams and Melissa Belle Gowin Adams, was born about 1890.  She was married at age 14, November 6, 1904 in Wood County, Texas to John Thomas Robinson, son of Joe T. Robinson.

Twenty years later tragedy overtook the Robinson family as described by Peggy Ann Davis Jones White, granddaughter of John Thomas Robinson and Lear Belle Adams Robinson:

"Early in 1924 there was an outbreak of measles in East Texas. Maudie Robinson took the measles first, with the measles spreading from one Robinson child to another until Lear Robinson, who had just given birth to Rowena Elvira got them. Lear, being very weak from doctoring a houseful of sick children, giving birth to the baby and then taking the measles became very, very ill. Tom Robinson went into Alba, which is located on the Rains‑Wood County line to get a doctor for Lear. Having ridden horseback into Alba in the cold February night rain, Tom Robinson was drenched and freezing when he returned home.

Lear Belle Adams Robinson died February 25, 1924, according to BVS File 6525.  John Thomas Robinson died two days later on February 27, 1924. Rowena Elvira Robinson died several days later. All died from measles and pneumonia. All three are buried next to the grave of Melissa Belle Gowin Adams in the Colony Cemetery.

After the deaths of Tom and Lear Robinson, their children went to stay with various relatives. Robert Ewell, who was known as Buster; his twin, William Ewele, who was known as Johnson; Archie; Lillard; Clyde and Claude went to stay with their grandmother, Melissa Belle Gowin Adams, who lived nearby.

Times were hard and money was short for Melissa Belle Gowin Adams, who already had two or three teenage sons at home to feed. Therefore, it was decided that the four youngest boys would be taken to an orphanage near Lubbock, Texas. It is now believed this was the Milam's Orphans' Home which burned to the ground shortly after the boys arrived there.  All records were reportedly destroyed in the fire.  The four boys were then taken from Lubbock to the Children's Home in Amarillo, Texas. The boys arrived in Amarillo in May 1925.

Records from the Children's Home show James Clyde Robinson was taken from the home in July 1925 by Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Clemmer of Dalhart, Texas.  Archie Green Robinson and his twin Joseph Lillard Robinson were taken from the home in December 1925 by John B. and Maggie G. Helm Davis of Hale County, Texas.  Records also show that Claude Robinson was taken from the home by his aunt, Mrs. M. M. Swindell, Rt. 1, Wilson, Texas, however Matilda Swindell, who was an aunt of Tom Robinson and a great aunt of Claude Robinson had died in December 1926 in Lamar County, Texas. Claude Robinson's widow informed this writer in June 1991 that she had never heard Claude mention an Aunt Matilda; she also told me that Claude was raised by a Mr. and Mrs. King in Hale County Texas.

In May 1929 while on a hunting trip near the home of their grandmother, Melissa Belle Gowin Adams in Rains County Robert Newele "Buster" Robinson was accidentally shot and killed by his twin brother, William Newele "Johnson" Robinson. " Buster" was buried beside his parents and sister in Colony Cemetery.

The remaining eight Robinson children were reunited in the mid 1930's. All are now deceased except for Clyde who this writer has never met. It is believed that he lives somewhere in California in 1993."
